The short answer: a catalytic converter sits in the exhaust system between the front oxygen sensor and the rear oxygen sensor. The location depends on the engine layout.

  • Inline 4-cylinder cars: often under the vehicle, near the engine or under the front seats.
  • V6/V8 cars: often have close-coupled converters near the exhaust manifolds, plus underbody converters further back.
  • Pickup trucks and SUVs: usually a larger converter under the cab or front floor area, sometimes with small pre-converters near the engine.

Why does this matter? If the converter is separate and underbody, you can replace it without touching the engine. If it's close-coupled or integrated into the exhaust manifold, the repair cost jumps significantly.

It also matters for diagnosis. A P0420 code does not automatically mean the converter is dead. I've seen converters replaced when the real issue was an exhaust leak or a lazy oxygen sensor. With a scan tool, watch the oxygen sensor readings. If the front sensor oscillates and the rear sensor follows it, the converter likely has low efficiency. If the rear sensor stays flat while the front oscillates, the converter seems to be working. Those patterns aren't a full diagnosis, but they can prevent an expensive mistake.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Stop looking for one magic answer. Use this quick check:

  • Filters: Routine service? Buy the correct OE-spec filter from a trusted source. Heavy-duty or extended intervals? Check specifications, not just the logo. Suspiciously cheap price? Assume it's counterfeit until proven otherwise.
  • Radiator leak: Hose, clamp, or drain plug? Small repair. Plastic end tank or internal cooler leak? Replace the radiator. Skip stop-leak except for a temporary emergency move.
  • Exhaust manifold: Flat flange and clean crack? Welding might be viable. Warped, broken, or integrated with a catalyst? Replacement is likely cheaper in the long run.
  • Catalytic converter: Where is it located? Can you replace just the converter, or do you have to buy the whole manifold? Have you confirmed converter failure before ordering the part?

The common thread is total cost. I don't always buy the cheapest option, and I don't always buy the most expensive one. I buy the part that fits the vehicle, has a traceable source, and gives the lowest chance of a second repair.
