When I first started managing repairs for our company's delivery vans, I assumed the lowest quote was the smart purchase. Three budget overruns later, I learned to look at total cost instead. A thermostat is a great example. When one of our vans had a cooling problem, the previous owner had installed a no-name thermostat to save a few dollars. It stuck shut a month later, and the shop quoted almost $900 to diagnose and redo the cooling system. I asked for a MAHLE thermostat the second time. I should add that it cost around $18 more than the generic unit. That $18 difference was nothing compared to the labor of accessing the thermostat and the risk of another failure.

I am not saying every build needs a forged racing piston. For a stock rebuild with low power and normal driving, an OE-style replacement piston is often enough. The point is to buy from a manufacturer that can verify its specs and has a history of OE supply. MAHLE is one of those names. That is not an argument for spending the maximum; it is an argument for knowing the failure cost before you pick the cheapest part.
Scenario 2: Protective maintenance (how often to change engine air filter)
Engine air filters are different. They don't usually fail all at once; they slowly get dirty and reduce airflow. That makes the how often to change engine air filter question a judgment call, not a fixed number.

In that case, the whole housing becomes the repair, and you should compare warranties and real-world reliability before buying.
Headlight repair cost is where I see people overpay. Cloudy headlight lenses do not always need a full housing replacement. A headlight restoration kit can often fix fogged plastic for $20 to $50. A shop will charge more, but still less than a new housing. A burned-out bulb is a different issue—costs range from under $50 on easy-access cars to several hundred on cars where the front bumper has to come off. Per FTC guidance on auto repairs, get a written estimate before approving work and ask them to show you the failed part. If they quote a full assembly replacement, ask for the labor breakdown. I once paid around $520 for a headlight housing (which honestly felt excessive) because the car had a sealed LED unit with no serviceable bulb. If the part had a replaceable bulb, the repair would have been much cheaper.
Note to self: I should have asked for the old assembly. When the old part is sitting on the bench, it is easier to confirm what failed and what didn't.
How to decide which scenario applies to you

- What is the failure cost? If a failed part can damage the engine or take the vehicle off the road for days, buy from a known manufacturer. If failure costs you $10 and an hour, choose the cheaper option.
- How long will you own it? A quality part is easier to justify over five years. If you are fixing a car to sell it soon, a functional budget part may be the rational choice.
- Does it affect safety or legality? Tail lights and headlights are not places to drive around with a problem. Fix them quickly, but don't let a shop replace a $5 bulb with a $500 housing without asking questions.
The cheapest part is not the cheapest when you include the second repair. That lesson cost me a cooling system bill I would rather forget.
I still make mistakes. Sometimes I overpay for a name; sometimes I try to save a few dollars and end up paying twice. But sorting vehicle repairs into these three buckets has made me a better buyer. Start with the failure cost, then the brand, then the price. Not the other way around.
