When I approve engine parts, the first thing I check isn't the logo. It's the inspection sheet. Here's the counterintuitive part: the prettiest piston can fail the only test that matters—installed clearance. I've seen a $1,800 set of forged pistons scuff in the first 30 minutes because the engine builder trusted a “drop-in” claim instead of measuring the bores. The piston itself was fine. The clearance was wrong.
Brake caliper covers: the cosmetic exception
Brake caliper covers are a different category entirely. I've inspected decorative covers for a friend's shop, and the quality split is easy to spot. The good ones use a bolted bracket and list the brake caliper model they fit. The bad ones say “universal fit” and rely on adhesive.
